“Putting the Fiddler into Fiddler’s Green”

The toughest task facing organisers of a major annual event is that of repeating, or improving upon,

the success of previous years. With the huge success of our 30th Anniversary Festival last year, the

task this year has seemed tougher still.

Having a tried and tested template in place definitely helps, but fresh imagination and renewed

commitment are also essential.

As you read through the list of various individual musicians and groups, you will see a pattern

emerging this year; we are really putting the “Fiddlers” into Fiddler’s Green, and in some style!

The recipient of this year’s Hall of Fame Award is virtuoso fiddler, the magical MARTIN HAYES.

Not only is the superb DONAL O’CONNOR conducting a fiddle workshop in our Music School, he will

also take the stage with ULAID.

NIALL MURPHY will share his fiddle brilliance with students in the Music School before joining his

band mates in BREAKING TRAD in concert.

THE KARAN CASEY BAND will feature the wonderful NIAMH DUNNE on fiddle. (Niamh is a member of

Beoga who have just appeared at Glastonbury with the one and only Ed Shearon).

Storyteller FRANCES QUINN will spin her tales to the musical strains of master fiddler, GERRY

With dozens of fiddlers, of all ages, attending the Music School, participating in open air sessions and

gracing pub sessions, the hills of Kilbroney will vibrate to the soaring sound of bow on strings, as

“Fiddler’s Green” becomes a fiddler’s dream.

The centrepiece of the festival is, as ever, the Festival Folk Club and this year’s stellar line-up includes:

- Unmissable ULAID

- Mighty Minstrel Trio MURPHY, MCGINN & TONER

- Mesmerising MARTIN HAYES (2017 Hall of Fame)

- Effervescent EDDI READER

- Super singing SANDS FAMILY

- A beautiful balance of instumentalism and sensational singing!

In EDDI READER and KARAN CASEY we have two of the finest female vocalists of this generation, and

our own SANDS FAMILY has acquired legendary status on the folk scene worldwide.

That giant of Irish songwriting, broadcasting and journalism, SHAY HEALEY, will receive our Creative

Arts Award at the hugely popular MUSIC OF HEALING event.

All musical tastes will be catered for on our OPEN AIR STAGE. On a daily basis, the stage in the Square

will feature a truly eclectic mix of music; folk, funk, jazz, blues, rock ‘n’ roll and with the addition of

percussion and dance workshops.

Dancers from Co. Down and further afield will flock to the ever popular ceilis in the Square.

In the FESTIVAL SCHOOL OF MUSIC, master musicians will deliver tuition on a range of instruments

(fiddle, flute, uilleann pipes, accordion, concertina and tin whistle) and budding songwriters will

benefit from the craft and experience of CHRISTY MCGUIGAN.

The brilliance of our local musical talent will enthral audiences in the perfect settings of our

The winners of our SOUNDS NEW event will not only receive the inaugural PATSY TINNELLY

MEMORIAL TROPHY, but will have the honour of playing support to MARTIN HAYES at the Hall of

Fame Concert.

There is a full programme of events for children, and with walks, talks, tours, exhibitions and sporting

events, from the opening band parade to the final tune or song, there has to be something for
